How to Spot a Fake Raaqi

Quick Answer

A fake raaqi often uses fear, dependency, secrecy and money to control vulnerable people. Warning signs include charging large amounts, insisting you keep returning, claiming to see specific jinn, giving taweez, selling spiritual items, using jinn to fight jinn, or telling you not to speak to family or scholars. Authentic Ruqyah is simple, Quran-based and should move you towards reliance on Allah, not reliance on a person.

This is part 2 of a series. Start with Hijama and Sihr: What It Can and Cannot Do if you want the wider context.

I am not a raaqi. I offer Hijama, dry cupping and recovery therapy. But I speak to people almost every week who have been to someone presenting themselves as a raaqi and have come away worse off than when they started. Poorer, more frightened and more dependent on a person who has given them nothing they could not have found for free in the Quran.

I am writing this because I think it needs to be said plainly. Vulnerable people are being exploited, and a lot of it is happening in Muslim communities in this country. If you are dealing with something difficult and you are considering seeing a raaqi, read this first.

What a Legitimate Raaqi Actually Looks Like

Authentic Ruqyah is simple. It is the recitation of Quran, especially verses and surahs such as Surah al-Baqarah, Ayat al-Kursi, Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas, along with authentic duas from the Sunnah.

There is no secret equipment required. There are no hidden methods. A legitimate practitioner of Ruqyah should teach you how to do self-ruqyah, encourage morning and evening adhkar, and move you towards reliance on Allah.

They should not create a situation where you cannot function without them. They should not tell you that your case is too complex for you to understand. They should not isolate you from your family, your imam or trustworthy scholars.

Warning Signs: What to Watch For

The following are red flags. Any one of them should make you cautious. Several of them together should make you walk away.

They Charge Large Amounts of Money

Authentic Ruqyah should not cost hundreds of pounds. If someone is charging significant sums per session, especially if sessions are frequent, be careful. The prescriptions of the Sunnah should not become a paid spiritual subscription.

They Tell You That You Need to Keep Coming Back

Creating dependency is one of the most common tactics. Your case is serious. It will take a long time. You need to see them every week. This keeps money coming in and keeps you afraid. A legitimate raaqi gives you the tools to help yourself and measures success by you needing them less, not more.

They Diagnose Specific Jinn by Name or Quantity

Claims like “you have three jinn” or “one of them is called such-and-such” or “I can see what is affecting you” should be treated with serious scepticism. The unseen is the unseen. These claims are designed to sound authoritative and keep you afraid.

They Give You a Taweez

A taweez is a physical amulet, usually containing written verses, numbers, symbols or other content, that a person is told to wear, carry or place in the home. If someone gives you a taweez, do not treat it lightly. Seek advice from a trustworthy scholar about how to deal with it properly.

They Use Jinn to Fight Jinn

This is one of the most serious issues. If the person claiming to help you is making arrangements with jinn in order to address your situation, stop seeing them and speak to a trustworthy scholar. However they frame it, this is not authentic Ruqyah.

They Tell You to Keep It Secret

Authentic Ruqyah is transparent. If someone tells you not to mention what they are doing to your family, spouse, imam or scholars, ask yourself why. Secrecy benefits the person who wants control. It does not benefit you.

They Sell You Items

Special oils, water, substances or objects sold as cures or protection should make you cautious. A legitimate raaqi does not need a product line. Be careful when spiritual help comes attached to merchandise.

They Make You Feel Worse After Seeing Them

If every session leaves you more frightened, more dependent and more convinced that your situation is worse than you thought, something is wrong. Genuine help moves you towards reliance on Allah. It does not move you towards reliance on a person.

What to Do If You Have Already Been Exploited

Stop seeing them. Speak to a trusted scholar or imam about what happened. If you were given a taweez, ask a scholar how to deal with it. Do not feel embarrassed. These people are skilled at targeting people who are already vulnerable.

Return to the basics. Recite Quran in your home. Be consistent with your morning and evening adhkar. Make dua directly to Allah with sincerity. These are prescribed means and they do not require anyone’s permission or payment.

Where Hijama Fits In

I get calls from people in these situations fairly often. Sometimes they have been told by the raaqi to go and get Hijama done as part of the treatment. Sometimes they just want to talk to someone they feel they can trust. I am always willing to have an honest conversation, and I will always point people in the right direction rather than just taking a booking.

What Hijama can do is support the body physically. If you have been in a prolonged state of stress, anxiety and fear, your body carries that. Hijama may help with the physical side: tension, circulation, general recovery and the grounding that comes from doing something from the Sunnah. It is not a cure for sihr, ayn or hasad.

If you want to come in for Hijama as a Sunnah practice or for physical support, you are welcome. If you want to talk through your situation first, send me a message on WhatsApp. I will give you an honest answer.

Common Questions

What is a fake raaqi?

A fake raaqi is someone presenting themselves as a Ruqyah practitioner while using fear, dependency, secret methods, inflated fees, taweez, jinn claims or un-Islamic practices to control or exploit vulnerable people.

What are the warning signs of a fake raaqi?

Major warning signs include high charges, repeated dependency, secret methods, claiming to see or name jinn, giving taweez, selling spiritual items, using jinn to fight jinn, or telling you not to speak to family or scholars.

Should a raaqi teach self-ruqyah?

A legitimate raaqi should encourage self-ruqyah, morning and evening adhkar, recitation of Quran and direct reliance on Allah. They should not make you dependent on them.

Can Hijama cure sihr, ayn or hasad?

No. Hijama is not a cure for sihr, ayn or hasad. Ruqyah, dua, Quran and reliance on Allah are the correct spiritual means. Hijama may support the body physically where stress and tension are present.

What should I do if I have been exploited by a fake raaqi?

Stop seeing them, speak to a trusted scholar or imam, seek support from family if safe, and return to authentic Ruqyah and adhkar. If money, threats or abuse are involved, consider appropriate safeguarding or legal support.
