Unlocking Wellness: Embracing Alternative Therapies in St. Albans

If you've been carrying tension for weeks, or your body just doesn't feel quite right and you're not sure where to start, you're not alone. A lot of people in St Albans and across Hertfordshire are turning to therapies like Hijama and cupping to support their recovery. Not because it's a trend, but because they've tried the usual routes and want something different. At Herts Cupping, that's exactly what we offer: private, clinical therapy sessions focused on getting your body to feel better.

Why more people are looking beyond conventional therapy

Massage alone helps, but for a lot of people the relief doesn't last. Physio is useful, but sessions are often short and booked weeks apart. There's nothing wrong with either, but there's a growing group of people who want something that goes a bit deeper, works on tight tissue and restricted movement, and actually gives them results they can feel. That's where cupping and combined recovery therapy comes in. St Albans has a genuinely strong wellness community, and more people here are discovering that these older, evidence-informed therapies can make a real difference for the right conditions.

What is Hijama and why does it lead our practice?

Hijama wet cupping has been practised for thousands of years, across ancient Egypt, China, Greece and through the Islamic tradition as a Sunnah practice. At Herts Cupping, it sits at the centre of everything we do. During a Hijama session, small cups are placed on targeted areas of the body to create suction, which can help encourage circulation, release deep muscle tension and support the body's natural detox process. Small, precise incisions are then made and the cups are reapplied, a process that has been used for centuries to support general wellbeing and recovery.

It's not painful. Most clients describe it as unusual at first, then deeply relaxing. The results, reduced tension, lighter legs, better sleep, improved movement, often show up within a day or two. If you've never had it done before, our Hijama guide explains exactly what to expect, step by step.

Dry cupping and fire cupping: a gentler entry point

Not everyone is ready for wet cupping, and that's fine. Dry cupping and fire cupping use the same suction principles without any incisions, making them a good option if you want to try cupping therapy for the first time, or if you're mainly looking to release tight muscles and stiffness. Both are available as standalone sessions or as part of a combined recovery package. You can see all available options on our services page.

Recovery sessions: cupping, massage and muscle scraping combined

For people dealing with stubborn tightness, restricted movement or deeper muscle issues, our Recovery Sessions combine cupping, therapeutic massage and IASTM (instrument-assisted muscle scraping) in a single session. These aren't three things bolted together. They're used in a specific sequence to address the tissue at different depths. Cupping lifts and decompresses. Massage works through layers of tension. Scraping targets adhesions and restricted fascia that massage alone often can't shift.

If you've had sports massage before and still feel like something isn't shifting, IASTM/muscle scraping is often the missing piece. It's particularly effective for people who carry chronic tension in the upper back, neck, shoulders and legs, and for athletes who need proper recovery between sessions.

Who is this for?

Our clients come from all different backgrounds. Some are active, runners, gym-goers, footballers, cricketers, and use sessions regularly for sports recovery. Others have been dealing with chronic back pain, neck tension or stress for years and want a different approach. Some come for Hijama specifically, for religious and spiritual reasons alongside the physical benefits. See the full range of conditions we support and find out whether cupping or combined therapy might be right for you.

If you're not sure which session to book, that's completely normal for a first visit. We'll ask about your concerns before we start and work out the best approach together.
