First time Hijama in St Albans: what to expect before you book

First Hijama (Wet Cupping) session? See what it feels like, how to prepare and what to expect. If you also want hands-on recovery work, choose a Recovery + Hijama session.

Before you book

You do not need to know the cup points or choose the “perfect” treatment yourself.

Tell us why you are interested in Hijama and any relevant health information. The consultation is there to decide whether wet cupping (Hijama) is suitable and which areas make sense, not to test how much you already know.

If you are nervous around blood, needles, faint easily or have had a poor cupping experience before, tell us. That changes how we pace the session and how quickly we sit you up afterwards.

If the reason you are booking is mainly muscular tightness or sports recovery, we may explain why a Recovery + Hijama session could be more useful than Hijama alone.

Before and during

Preparation and the appointment, without overcomplicating either.

First-time clients usually need two things: simple preparation and a clear picture of what happens next.

Preparing for your appointment

Keep it normal. You do not need an extreme pre-Hijama routine.

The goal is to arrive comfortable, hydrated and able to tolerate the session well.

Leave at least 2 hours after food

For Hijama, we ask you not to eat for at least 2 hours before the session. Drink water normally and stay hydrated. You do not need to fast all day.

Hydrate

Drink normally during the day. Being dehydrated can make any blood-related treatment feel harder than it needs to.

Wear practical clothing

Loose clothing makes it easier to access the back, shoulders or legs while keeping the session private.

Skip hard training immediately beforehand

You do not need to arrive after exhausting yourself. If you trained hard that day, tell us so treatment intensity can be adjusted.

Bring questions

If something about the process worries you, ask before we start. There is no benefit in pretending you are comfortable when you are not.

What first-timers notice

Feeling, marks, aftercare and the clinic process in one place.

Use the selector to check the specific part you are unsure about rather than scrolling through four separate explanations.

Does it hurt?

Most first-timers expect something worse than what they actually feel.

The suction can feel firm, especially over a tight area. It should feel like pulling or pressure rather than uncontrolled pain. We can reduce cup pressure at any point.

The superficial scratches are quick and shallow. People describe them differently, but many compare them to a light scratch rather than a deep cut. The wet-cupping stage itself often feels more like suction than like the scratches.

If you become light-headed, tell us immediately. There is no prize for pushing through discomfort. The session can be slowed, reduced or stopped.

Common questions

Straight answers before you book.

These are the practical questions clients ask most often. If your situation is more specific, message us before booking.

I am nervous about blood. Can I still book?

Yes, but tell us beforehand. We can explain the process in more detail, use fewer cups and make sure you sit up slowly afterwards. If you have a strong fainting history, message first.

Do I have to fast before Hijama?

You do not need to fast all day. At Herts Cupping, we ask clients to avoid food for at least 2 hours before Hijama while drinking water normally and staying hydrated. If fasting or delaying food could make you unwell because of diabetes, medication or another condition, message us first.

What should I wear?

Loose, practical clothing is best. We preserve privacy and only expose the area being treated.

How much blood comes out?

Usually a small amount. It varies and is not something we try to maximise.

How long do the marks last?

Commonly several days, although skin response varies. They should gradually fade.

Can I drive home?

Most clients can drive normally. If you feel light-headed, we will have you sit, hydrate and settle before leaving.

Can I train later the same day?

We normally advise against strenuous training for around 24 hours after wet cupping.

Which Hijama option should a first-timer choose?

Up to 10 cups is the usual choice for most clients, but there is nothing wrong with choosing up to 5 cups if you want a smaller first session.

Can ladies request a female Hijama practitioner?

Limited female-practitioner availability applies to Hijama appointments only. It is not a daily service and does not cover massage or Recovery sessions, so please confirm availability on WhatsApp before booking.
