Why Your Shoulders Never Switch Off, Even When You Are Resting

26 August 2026 2 min read

A practitioner-led look at the shoulders-up habit: work, screens, breathing, training and why temporary relief can disappear so quickly.

Your body practises the position you spend time in

If your working day is eight or ten hours at a laptop, the neck and upper back do not care that you stretched for two minutes at lunch. The repeated position usually wins.

Why massage can feel good and then disappear

Hands-on treatment can reduce the sense of tightness for a period, but it cannot erase the rest of the week. If the same workload, posture and sleep pattern continue, the same muscles may become loaded again.

Training can add to the pattern

Heavy pressing, pulling, shrugging, carrying and repeated upper-body work all add load. That does not mean training is bad. It means recovery needs to be considered alongside work and daily posture.

What we do in clinic

We ask where the tension sits, what your day looks like and whether one main region or several areas need time. A stress-related body-tension session may use hands-on work, dry cupping or other methods when appropriate, but the aim is not to chase pain with random techniques.

What you can change outside the clinic

Break long static periods, move more often, adjust the setup you spend hours in, manage training load and take sleep seriously. Treatment can support the body; it cannot live your week for you.
