Dry cupping therapy for tight muscles, recovery and movement restriction

Dry cupping is often sold as simply placing cups on tight areas. At Herts Cupping, we use it more precisely. Your session may include static cups, moving cupping, passive stretching under suction and active movement while the cup is on, depending on what your body needs.

That movement-led approach is especially useful for tight backs, neck and shoulder tension, gym recovery, restricted hips, hamstrings, calves and recurring muscle tightness where standard massage has not fully held.

Why clients book dry cupping

01
Dry cupping can support back tightness, shoulder tension, sports recovery and restricted movement.
02
We use static cups, moving cupping and movement-led techniques rather than one fixed method for everyone.
03
It is a non-invasive option with no incisions, making it a common first step before Hijama.

Not all dry cupping is the same

Many clinics offer dry cupping by placing cups on the back and leaving them there. That can be useful, but it is only one way to use cupping. We also use moving cupping and movement-based techniques where suitable, so the tissue is worked through different ranges rather than treated in one fixed position.

Technique 01

Static dry cupping

Cups stay in place over tight or restricted areas. Useful for local back, neck, shoulder and leg tension.

Technique 02

Moving cupping

The cup glides across the skin with oil. Useful for larger areas such as the back, hamstrings, calves and quads.

Technique 03

Passive movement

We move the area for you while suction is applied, often used for shoulders, hips and restricted range.

Technique 04

Active movement

You gently move through a controlled pattern while the cup is on, helping us work the tissue in the position it feels restricted.

The difference: passive and active movement can make dry cupping feel more specific. Instead of only treating where the tissue feels tight at rest, we can work the area while it moves, which is often where clients actually feel the restriction.

Dry cupping marks can vary from light to darker circles

Cupping marks are a normal suction response. Some areas may mark lightly, while tighter or more reactive areas may leave more visible circles for a few days.

What is dry cupping?

Dry cupping is a non-invasive form of cupping therapy that uses suction cups on the skin without incisions. The suction gently lifts the skin and soft tissue, which can support local circulation, ease muscular tightness and help restricted areas feel looser.

It is different from Hijama wet cupping because there are no small scratches and no bloodletting step. It is also different from massage because massage mainly presses into the tissue, while dry cupping uses suction to lift and decompress the area.

At Herts Cupping, dry cupping can be used alone as a focused session or built into a wider recovery session with deep tissue work and IASTM muscle scraping where the issue needs more than cupping alone.

Why our approach is different

We use dry cupping with movement, not just cups left on the skin

Movement changes the treatment. A shoulder can feel fine at rest but restricted when you raise the arm. A hamstring may feel normal lying still but tight during a hinge or stride. A lower back may feel worse when rotating, sitting or bending.

Where suitable, we use active or passive movement during dry cupping to work through those real restrictions. This makes the session more targeted for gym-goers, runners, desk workers and clients who feel tight only in certain positions.

We still use static cupping when that is the better option. The point is not to make the session complicated. The point is to choose the method that fits your body.

The mark comes from suction, not cuts

Dry cupping does not involve incisions. The circular marks come from suction and local tissue response. Hijama is different because it is wet cupping and includes small superficial scratches.

Hamstring, calf and quad tightness
Hip and glute restriction
Post-training soreness and heavy legs

Who dry cupping is for

Gym-goers and lifters often book dry cupping for tight backs, traps, shoulders, glutes, hip flexors and hamstrings. Active cupping can be useful when tightness appears during squats, deadlifts, pressing, pulling or running mechanics.

Desk workers and drivers often book for neck, upper back and shoulder tension from long hours sitting, laptop posture or repeated driving positions. Moving cupping may be used across larger back areas where tension has built up gradually.

First-time cupping clients often start with dry cupping because there are no incisions. You still get a proper cupping session, but without the wet cupping step used in Hijama.

Clients who already have Hijama sometimes use dry cupping between Hijama sessions for maintenance, recovery or muscle tightness.

What happens in a dry cupping session?

Every session is private, one-to-one and starts with a consultation. We choose the technique based on your issue, comfort level and treatment goal.

Consultation

We discuss your symptoms, training, posture, tight areas and any health factors before treatment.

2

Technique choice

We decide whether static, moving, active movement or passive movement cupping is most suitable.

3

Cupping work

Cups are applied with controlled suction. You can ask for pressure to be reduced at any point.

4

Aftercare

You receive aftercare guidance so you know what to expect from the marks, hydration and training.

Dry cupping, Hijama or fire cupping?

All three are available at Herts Cupping. The right choice depends on whether you want a non-invasive cupping session, traditional Hijama wet cupping, or a more traditional heat-assisted cupping method.

Incisions: None
Heat: Yes, indirect
Best for: Traditional dry cupping feel
From: £45

Dry cupping marks and aftercare

Dry cupping can leave circular marks where the cups were placed. These marks are common and usually fade within a few days, although this varies from person to person. Static cups tend to leave clearer marks than moving cupping.

If you have a wedding, holiday, sports event, photoshoot or anything where visible marks matter, tell us before the session. We can adjust the technique, use lighter suction or focus more on moving cupping where suitable.

When to get medical advice first

Do not book cupping as a replacement for medical assessment if you have severe unexplained pain, numbness, weakness, fever, infection, suspected fracture, suspected blood clot, unexplained swelling, recent trauma or symptoms that are getting worse. Message us first if you are unsure.

Darker marks do not automatically mean better results

The goal is not to create the darkest possible circles. The aim is to use the right amount of suction for your comfort, tissue response and reason for booking. Marks are only one part of the picture.

Dry cupping FAQs

What is dry cupping?

Dry cupping is cupping therapy without incisions. Suction cups are placed on the skin to lift the soft tissue and support local circulation, muscular relaxation and recovery. At Herts Cupping, dry cupping may include static cups, moving cupping, active movement or passive movement depending on your issue.

What makes your dry cupping different?

We do not only place cups and leave them on the skin. Where suitable, we use moving cupping, passive movement and active movement under suction. This allows us to work with the area while it moves, which can be useful for sports recovery, mobility issues and tightness that appears during certain positions.

What is active movement cupping?

Active movement cupping means you gently move the treated area while the cup is applied. For example, the shoulder may move through a controlled range, or the hip and leg may move through a gentle pattern. It is always guided and adjusted to your comfort.

What is passive movement cupping?

Passive movement cupping means we gently move the area for you while suction is applied. This can be useful when the goal is to keep you relaxed while working through restriction around the shoulder, hip, neck, upper back or legs.

Is dry cupping the same as Hijama?

No. Dry cupping uses suction only and does not involve incisions. Hijama is wet cupping and includes small superficial scratches after suction. Hijama is often chosen for Sunnah practice, detox, body heaviness and deeper wet cupping. Dry cupping is often chosen for muscle tightness, sports recovery and first-time cupping without incisions.

Does dry cupping hurt?

Most clients describe it as a firm pulling sensation rather than sharp pain. Some areas are more sensitive than others, especially when tissue is tight. We control the suction and can reduce it at any point.

How long do dry cupping marks last?

Marks commonly fade within a few days, but this varies depending on the person, area treated and suction level. Static cups usually leave clearer circular marks, while moving cupping may leave lighter marks.

What should I book for dry cupping?

If you have one or two focused areas, Clinical Dry Cupping may be enough. If the issue involves several linked areas, stubborn tightness, sports recovery or movement restriction, Targeted Recovery may be more suitable because it can include cupping, deep tissue work and IASTM. Message us first if you are unsure.
